EDTECH 504: Learning Log Reflection

The most important aspect of the semester was the ability to explore various learning theories in the context of professional interests (i.e. teacher-training). The personalised and constructive nature of several of the assignments (e.g. Learning Theories Comparison, Annotated Bibliography, Synthesis Paper) challenged me to explore how each theory was not only rooted but applicable.

One of the main aspects of this course that has changed a perspective on my own teaching (when I do teacher-training for technology) is to go deeper in theory integration. While previously I felt satisfied with a focus on instructional design (it is only a 10 week course) to maintain focus on actual educational objectives, however the evidence for the “skills” to integrate technology must include a synthesis of learning theories to truly connect with cognitive science. As such, I have already re-designed the introduction of the course to include a more concrete coverage of educational technology alongside two frameworks (i.e. SAMR, TPACK) alongside Instructional Design.

I also find three assignments in particular to be demonstrative of several AECT Goals and Objectives.

1. Learning Theories Comparison – 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4

Though potentially abstract, by comparing two learning theories evidence of Standard 5: Research, is present. Information was gathered through basic methodology, evaluated, and synthesised to draw conclusions about the theories within the context of a teacher-trainer.

2. Annotated Bibliography – 4.3, 5.1, 5.4

This assignment also allowed for the development of theoretical foundations through the exploration of current knowledge, as well reflection on the validity of resources, and insights gained through the experience.

3. Synthesis Paper – 4.1, 4.3, 5.1, 5.3, 5.4

The paper was ultimately the result of a significant amount of research exploring peer reviewed journals but was also collaborated on with peers for formative reviews prior to final submission. Reflections by proxy through the process of peer review as well as at the end also evidence the AECT indicators.
